Physical Education (P.E.)

Our Intent
Physical education promotes children's understanding of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.
Physical Education at St. Luke’s CE Primary School aims to impart an engaging, inclusive and coherent high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel individual’s abilities in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.
We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. PE at St. Luke’s is an essential element of the curriculum, which develops a need for healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet, growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities that may be challenging. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Our intent is to provide opportunities for all our children to develop as independent, confident, successful learners with high aspirations who will demonstrate a lifelong love for physical activity and sport.
Through the teaching of PE at St. Luke’s we aim to:
-
Enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
-
Encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations.
-
Develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities.
-
Show children how to improve the quality and control of their performance.
-
Teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise.
-
Develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination.
-
Develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.
-
Assess pupils learning, analyse and interpret the results to inform future planning and lessons.

Planning and Delivery
Pupils at St Luke’s participate in weekly high quality PE lessons and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports (Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Swimming and Water Safety) to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events and festivals. This inclusive, coherent approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also improved well-being for all pupils.
