On Tuesday, St Luke’s Primary School was transported into a world of magic, mischief, and music as children were treated to a captivating performance of The Vanishing Forest, a new opera from English Touring Opera.
Combining Shakespearean storytelling with contemporary environmental themes, the opera used puppetry, spellbinding music, and magical flowers to engage young audiences with the urgent issue of climate change.
The performance left a lasting impression on pupils across the school. Ayaan in Year 6 called it “the best play I have ever watched,” while Elias in Year 5 marvelled at the performers' vocal range, saying he loved “how they all had such high and low voices.”
Year 4 pupil Axel praised the musicality and energy of the cast, sharing, “I enjoyed all the songs and the lovely acting.” Meanwhile, Natalie in Year 4 was moved by the plot, saying, “I enjoyed how Puck tried to save the woods.”
The performance inspired important conversations about nature and our responsibility to protect it, while giving children an unforgettable introduction to opera and Shakespeare.
