Our Year 4 students enjoyed a truly inspiring visit to Southwark Cathedral last week, displaying brilliant behaviour throughout the trip and representing St Luke’s beautifully. The visit provided a rich and meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of our R.E. learning on Advent and the Incarnation of Jesus, helping the children connect classroom learning with real-life Christian traditions and worship.
During the visit, the children were captivated by the Cathedral’s stunning stained-glass windows. They explored the stories and symbolism woven into each design, discovering how light and colour are used to express Christian beliefs. This tied beautifully into their discussions about Jesus as the Light of the World, a theme the children have been exploring in class.
A highlight for many was the opportunity to make their own candles—an activity that helped them reflect on the meaning of light during Advent and how Christians use symbols to prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.
The children also had the chance to explore the Cathedral itself, learning about its history, architecture, and importance as a place of worship. They asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity as they walked around the building.
Overall, it was a thoughtful and enriching visit that brought our R.E. learning to life. We are incredibly proud of Year 4 for the respect, enthusiasm and maturity they showed on the trip, truly demonstrating Hearts overflowing with truth and love.
